015 "How Do I Say This Without Breaking It"

The air is filled with the scent of early autumn florals, carried along by a gentle breeze. Marigolds, gardenias, chrysanthemums, and witches hazel waft from her late grandmother’s garden, creating a comforting atmosphere. Greta finds solace in this place — it is where she feels most at home. She waves to her childhood friend, Emil, who visits a few times a week. He maintains the landscaping and the gardens that were once a cherished hobby of her grandmother, Penelope, before her passing. Even making the trip down south to San Diego to collect a few, but more rare, gardenias that her grandmother loved dearly.

Greta can hear her mother’s voice inside the kitchen, humming a sweet tune as her two children compete for Daphne’s attention. It almost feels like a chore to leave her children with her mother, but Greta still has a long day ahead of her before she joins them at the baby shower being held for Emmet and Iris.

The sun peeks through a thick layer of clouds. The unpredictable weather of mid-October has become increasingly difficult for Greta. She starts pulling on the cardigan she had thrown over her button-up blouse.

Her husband left for the police station early in the morning. These days, it feels as if he spends more time there than with his family. But the local news channels assure her it’s not by choice. Still, this doesn’t settle her mind.
